Everything You Need to Know About Our Rod Breakdown Machine
Got a question about our rod breakdown line? Find the answer here, or contact our team for a tailored solution.
What is a rod breakdown machine and what does it do?
A rod breakdown machine is a wire drawing system that reduces the diameter of copper or aluminum wire rod (typically 8mm) into smaller wire sizes through a series of drawing dies and capstans. In cable manufacturing, it is the first and most critical step after the rod — directly deciding the final wire's dimensional accuracy, surface finish and elongation. Modern machines often integrate continuous annealing, online diameter control and automatic dual take-up to deliver finished wire in a single continuous process.
What's the difference between copper rod breakdown and aluminum rod breakdown machines?
The core working principle is the same, but the process settings differ sharply. Copper is drawn at higher speeds with a continuous annealing furnace built in to restore ductility after heavy reduction. Aluminum work-hardens faster, so the machine uses a different reduction ratio per pass, die angle and cooler lubrication system; some lines add an inline intermediate annealer. In short: copper lines focus on speed and surface quality, while aluminum lines focus on deformation control and thermal management.
What output and wire sizes can your rod breakdown machine handle?
This depends on the specific model, but our standard copper rod breakdown line typically draws 8mm rod down to finished sizes from 1.2mm to 4.0mm, with drawing speeds up to 25–30 m/s, and is equipped with dual bobbin take-up for non-stop production. Output is usually expressed in finished wire length or tonnage per hour and varies with inlet/outlet size and conductivity grade. For your exact requirement, we recommend sharing the rod material, inlet and target outlet diameter, and hourly output — we will match the model and line configuration accordingly.
How energy-efficient is the machine? Can it reduce our operating cost?
Yes. Our machines use variable-frequency drive (VFD) motors on each capstan and an energy-saving annealing transformer, which cut idle and partial-load power draw noticeably. Precise lubrication and temperature control also extend die life and reduce wire breakage, lowering both material scrap and maintenance cost. Many customers report a clear drop in unit power consumption after replacing older fixed-speed lines, though the exact saving depends on local electricity price, shift pattern and product mix.
Do you provide installation, commissioning and after-sales support?
Yes. Every machine is delivered with complete documentation and is installed and commissioned on site by our engineers, including operator training and process parameter setup for your product. We provide spare parts support, remote troubleshooting and a responsive after-sales team — with local agents or service coverage for major export markets. Lead time, warranty terms and on-site support scope are confirmed in the quotation based on destination and machine configuration.
